Shree Padmanabhaswamy temple – Richer than the Richest

The temple is not only the richest temple in India but the richest Hindu temple in the world with over $22 billion worth of gold in its underground chambers.

The temple is an intricate fusion of Kerala style and Dravidian style of architecture which makes its appearance even more unique. The principal deity is Lord Vishnu, reclining on “Adi Sesha,” the five serpents as shown in various TV shows over the years. The temple has two more shrines dedicated to  Ugna Narasimha and Lord Krishna.

The ancient temple, which is even mentioned in Matsya and a lot of other Puranas, is found in the east fort in the Trivandrum city.

In adherence to an age-old tradition, the temple management allows women devotees to enter the premises given they are wearing either a Saree or a Dhoti or a long skirt.

Poovar Island marks the very end of Kerala. Just 30 km from Thiruvananthapuram, the fishing island is famous for its golden sand beaches. Nearby, the place proves to be a quiet tourist spot. Perfect for people who hate Crowded tourist places.

The place got its name “Poovar” from Marthanda Varma, the king of Travancore ( 1706 – 58) when he came to this location to hide from the Lords of the eight houses. On his way, he saw some flowers which had fallen into the sea. Impressed by this beautiful sight, he commented that this was “Poo-Var,” a conjunction of the Malayalam words for “flower” and “river.”

To reach the Golden sand beach, you have to take a cruise trip. The highlight of the Cruise is when you pass through a narrow canal which has lots and lots of mangrove trees on either side. A delight to watch !!

You will be given 20-25 minutes to spend on the beach and enjoy the scenery before the cruise heads back.

Do remember to bargain hard with the cruise owners as the price of the trip is highly inflated ( 200-300 %).

Padnabhapuram Palace – The Royal Wooden Palace

As soon as you enter the Padnabhapuram, you are transported to an entirely different time. The palace made of wood was built between 1592 and 1609. The Palace complex is found inside the Padnabhapuram fort which is 4 km length.

You will be surprised to know that this palace lies in the state of Tamil Nadu. However, it is managed and maintained by Govt. of Kerala.

Various interesting artifacts and structures await you inside the Palace. For example-

                  • a three-hundred-year-old clock that still keeps time.
                  • Weapons used in warfare
                  • A room filled with Chinese jars brought by Chinese merchants
                  • beautiful floral patterns on the ceilings

You can easily reach there by hiring a cab or taking a bus ride from Trivandrum. Mind you; the bus stand is about 3 km from the Palace.

Trivandrum Zoo – Come Face to Face with the Anaconda

This uncreatively named zoo is one of the best in the country. Spreading over an area of 55 acres with many woodland, lakes, and lawns, you can witness 82 enchantingly beautiful animals like Lion-tailed macaque, Nilgiri langur, and one snake you have only see in movies.

Guess who?

The Anaconda. Yes, you read that right, Anaconda. Not just 1 or 2 but 7 of them. These Anacondas earned the Zoo a place in our top Trivandrum city’s points of Interest list.

It takes around 4-5 hrs to cover the whole zoo and if you decide to hang around for that long, you will not be disappointed.

The Zoo has the facility of Battery operated vans for the elderly and people short on time. Like most other tourist spots and points of Interest in Trivandrum, the zoo is closed on Monday.

Aruvikkara Dam – A quiet and relaxing Getaway

Located on the outskirts of Trivandrum city, Aruvikkara Dam is a small dam made on Karamana river.

Earlier one could enter the dam and be face to face with an enormous amount of water falling, but due to some Mishaps, the entry to the dam is not allowed. However, this does not make this tourist place any less fascinating.

Feeding fishes which come to the banks of the river is very soothing and relaxing. When you are done with feeding the fishes, you can visit the nearby Durga temple.

Hawa Beach – Adventure Junkie’s Paradise

Hawa beach also known as eve’s beach got its name when topless foreigners used to frequent the beach to get some tan. The locals believed that the foreigners wanted to get some air ( Hawa ). However, Nude beaches are not allowed anymore in India.

Surrounded by beautiful Palm groves, the beach is clean and well maintained. The place is a favorite among adventure junkies as one can enjoy adventure sports like – Windsurfing, Boat sailing, etc.
